I have an Aspire 5920 laptop purchased from Currys a couple of years ago (I know, but I needed a new laptop in a hurry when my old one died). Unsure whether it's the 'G' model (lost the receipt), but it has a bluray drive and Windows Vista. It's been getting steadily more clunky and slow, and I think the time has come to reinstall Windows and lose a lot of dross.

Is it just me, or does Windows slowly get slower over time and the only real cure is reinstall? As I'm contemplating this step, I thought I might go for Windows 7 to make life easier for SWMBO, who doesn't really carry her very limited knowledge from one operating system to another.
She already has her own laptop with Windows 7 (not that she really knows how to use it ), so it would be easier for her to use mine when she needs to. The Vista on my Aspire is 32 bit, but I am considering just doing a clean install of 64 bit Windows 7. Alas, the Acer website assumes that you will just do an 'upgrade' without reformat etc, using their recovery discs. This wouldn't work if going from 32bit to 64 bit - clean install required. The 5920 has lots of extra little buttons for multimedia, rapid access to wifi on/off, internet, mail etc. I've already disabled most of these on my laptop as they are not particularly helpful, and often just plain annoying - e.g. Opening a player menu when I catch one of the right side buttons while trying to use pageup/down.
The only ones I use are wifion/off, internet and mail. Microsoft's upgrade site suggest that one can get new drivers etc from the Acer website. REAL QUESTION: If I do this clean install of Windows 7 64bit, would my left side extra buttons (wifi, internet, mail) still work, or would I have to reinstall 'Acer Empowering Technology. If that is the case, I'm not sure how, as the Acer site doesn't seem to include that for Windows 7 on my laptop.

The built in microphone on my ACER 5920 are not being recognoised by any program that requires it, yet under 'sound options', 'recording' it says: Microphone, Realtek High definition audio working. Though unlike the output devices there are no blue bars to the right which I assume.

Best Answer: Have you actually tried using it outside of those programs? Try going into Programs-Accesories-Sound Recorder and see if it working from there. IF all goes well, then it is an issue with the software program itself and may have to be reconfigured or reinstalled to resolve the issue.
Now if you cannot even do that, then i suggest going to MyComputer (rightClick)-Manage-DeviceManager Sometimes if you pick up an 'updated' driver when nothing was ever wrong in the first place(thanks a lot 'automatic updates') it can screw up the item and you will want to look for the original drivers for the piece of hardware. So you try 'Rollback Driver' and see if that works.else Try uninstalling the device and then Scan for Hardware Changes'. If Nothing resolves the issue there MAY be sumthing 'physically' wrong with the hrdware for the mic. If you are still under 1yr from purchase date ur covered my the manufacture's warranty(hardware issues only). And you can speak with them and send the item in for service repair. I hav and Acer myself and they(customer servc) are very helpful.
